The ‘Exhibit Asia’ journal project consists of four articles equally spread across two issues. Separately, each of the articles has its own focus on either one or two Asian countries. Collectively, they explore how the identity and public image of four Asian countries – China, Japan, India and Pakistan – were formed and projected through exhibitions, art displays and model villages from the late nineteenth century to the 1960s. The four articles brought together for the special journal issue (vol.67-1 and vol.67-2) are intended to demonstrate hybrid and fluid approaches in presenting and projecting national identities adopted by the four Asian countries. The four cases we explore each has its own historical contextual significance, reflecting different global political situations from high peak of colonialism, to expansion of imperialism, to the beginnings of de-colonisation.
